About Us

Our Mission

We aim to provide a safe and loving permanent home to animals at risk of slaughter, neglect or homelessness. We provide veterinary care and a safe place for these animals to heal and live out their lives in peace.

About OUR Founder

Hi! My name is Malgosia (Magosha). It’s nice to meet you!

I’m an Ottawa native and spent my first 18 years in Nepean, before moving to Prince Edward Island for university.  In 2010, I graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College and after some time living in US, I finally settled in Ottawa again in 2012.

Throughout my veterinary career, I have worked with small animals, horses and lab animals, however regardless of species, my main interests have always been animal ethics, welfare and rights. As such, I have always been very concerned about how we treat non-human animals in our society.

Apart from veterinary medicine and rescuing animals, I’m interested in vegetarianism/veganism, quilting, and pretty much anything involving Scandinavian design.

OUR STORY

While doing a routine vaccination appointment in 2014, I was told there was a really nice horse at the farm who was unfortunately going to auction (and therefore most likely slaughter) because he had a limp and was therefore not able to be ridden.

Although this was a story I heard almost daily when volunteering with a racetrack veterinarian during undergrad and vet school, now that I was practicing, I could finally afford to adopt this animal and give him a home. The horses name was Leo and he became my first official rescue.

Since then, I have adopted three more horses whose outcomes looked bleak (in addition to a number of rescue cats), but financially, that was all I could handle on my own. That's when I decided to sell my house in downtown Ottawa and use my modest profits to buy some land in the country and try to start an animal sanctuary. This was where The Kind Barn officially began.

As of December 2021, I have built a paddock with a run-in shed for my rescues and have added tons and tons of hay. I have also recently taken in 4 rescue cats who currently live with me as well.

I look forward to building not only the infrastructure and making The Kind Barn a true home for my animals, but also building a community – and taking in more animals who need homes as I have the capacity to do so.

Our Current Facility

Located between Carleton Place and Smiths Falls, the facility is located on a five acre plot of land that is currently being developed for the Sanctuary.

LOOKING AHEAD

Future plans include building additional paddocks and an insulated barn where we can provide round the clock medical care throughout the year.

The Kind Barn is a registered Canadian Non-Profit Organization.
